How Can I Change the Shape of My Body (And Other Common Complaints)?
I
get this question a lot, especially from women. We don't have to go
too far before hearing about toning thunder thighs and flattening pudgy
abs. The reality: It's sad but true, you can't make your body slim down
in one place before another. Nor can you overcome your genetic
tendencies of composition/shape.
But what you can do is a
sensible exercise program. Squats, lunges, and leg press will make a
difference in the appearance of your thighs (quads and hamstrings +
adductors and abductors) as well as butt (glutes) provided that you use
heavy enough resistance - no mini-weights allowed!
Of course,
cardio is important as well. High Intensity Interval Training seems to
be linked to better fat loss results than steady-state cardio, along
with less muscle loss. There is lots of info on HIIT online. If you
aren't a convert already, read and believe.
Additionally, I
strongly recommend to anyone concerned about their appearance that they
focus on building up their upper body musculature. By widening your
shoulders and filling out your arms, chest, and back, your waist will
appear narrower and your lower body slimmer. Don't worry about "bulking up" -
that is just a myth to keep women away from weights. Instead you'll
look sleek and strong!
