"I am a 58 year old woman, who has been married for almost 40 years. I have 4 grown children and 8 grandchildren...and I have always struggled with my weight. This time I knew I needed more than just dieting so I asked Emily Beker if she'd be willing to work with me and to give me some pointers. "After talking with Emily, it was clear I had two goals - to tone up muscles and to get help with weight loss. She came up with a plan with specific exercises that would help with what I needed. "On a weekly basis, Emily taught me new exercises (sometimes doing them alongside me) and always made sure that my technique was correct. At the end of each session, she wrote up the exercises I had done so I could keep track and keep doing them on my own at home during the week. I have a small build and went through menopause a number of years ago. Unfortunately, for the last few years, I've been losing bone density and have osteopenia, almost osteoporosis. I needed to do something, but I didn't want to use Fosamax, Boniva, or other such drugs if I could avoid it. The books I've read and the doctors I've consulted all strongly recommend increasing Calcium and Vitamin D and doing weight-bearing exercises - but these exercises need to be carefully and correctly done to avoid injury and maximize results. Initially, I was afraid to make a mistake so I tried a few exercises with 2 lb. and then 5 lb. weights, but it wasn't enough to make a difference. (I also wasn't really sure which moves were the best for maintaining strength and helping my bones.) So I turned to Emily. With her encouragement and coaching, I was able to use 10 lb. and 15 lb. weights in each hand (and do certain exercises with one 25 lb. weight). She showed me what to do, watched me with great care, gave me suggestions, and gave me confidence - and she never, ever pushed me to do more than I could. What a difference! Along with increasing my daily intake of Calcium and Vitamin D (as per my doctor's recommendations), I've done the weight-bearing exercises Emily taught me. And what seemed impossible now feels quite doable. And here's the really good news: I just had my annual DXA bone density test. And instead of losing yet more bone density, I went up a significant amount! And this was without using Fosamax, Boniva, or the like. So my bones improved. My body got more toned.
